Shaydid was formed in 2002 with three members; Mark Sweeney (drums), Stéphane Déraspe (vocal, keyboards, bass) and the late Rob Hunt (guitar, vocal). Crystal Sweeney joined the band in 2003 with this lineup lasting 4 years. With the departure of Rob, Darrin joined the band in early 2007 to take over guitar and vocal duties. After a few month's, Stéphane moved on to other projects and Kirk Hazel was introduced on bass and vocals with this lineup lasting 16 years. Mark's departure in late 2023 led to Randy Chaisson taking on drum work with Kirk Hazel leaving in early 2024. Kevin 'Toad' Saulnier is now playing bass, keyboard with vocal tasks.
Shaydid has become a versatile cover band from Halifax, NS, known for their dynamic pop/rock sound. Influenced by the energy of many music types, Shaydid has carved out a unique entertainment style that has captivated audiences across Canada.
One of Shaydid's career milestones was performing in the Caribbean (Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic), where they showcased 'Fun in the Sun' making new fans along the way. Their music has been shaped by their experiences growing up in musical families, where they absorbed vibrant rhythms and melodies.
Their live performances are known for their high energy and infectious charisma, drawing in audiences from all walks of life. Shaydid has played with notable artists in the industry including Haywire, April Wine, Jimmy Rankin to name a few. With a passion for playing music that resonates with listeners, Shaydid continues to push boundaries and explore new musical territories, leaving a lasting impact on the music scene.
Crystal Sweeney
Vocals / Keyboards / Guitar
Crystal is from the musical Clements family of Roseville PEI. After moving to Halifax in 2000 she was fortunate enough to meet her fellow musicians and was eventually able to share her musical persona with Shaydid in 2003.
While Playing full time with Shaydid, Crystal earned a master's degree in Molecular Biology at Acadia University in Wolfville NS and finished her PhD in Neuroscience at Dalhousie University in Halifax.
Darrin Shaw
Guitar / Vocals
While growing up in Prospect NS, Darrin-being the youngest- was musically influenced by both parents and family. Hearing his first live band at a high school coffee house, is was apparent he would inherit a passion for playing music.
Darrin started playing professional in 1989 with various bands until he found his first successful cover band Shameless in 1993 opening for acts including Loverboy, Blue Rodeo, Harem Scarem and Trooper. After 14 years Darrin joined Shaydid in 2007, playing numerous venues and continues to enjoy the journey.
Darrin also finds interest in sound engineering and launched Shaw Sound and Lighting in 2012 which he still operates today.
Kevin 'Toad' Saulnier
Bass / Keyboards / Vocals
Multi-instrumentalist Kevin “Toad” Saulnier hails from the musical Acadian region of Clare, Nova Scotia. Playing music since the age of 4, his talents have taken him all the way to International stages, recording studios and televisions with the likes of Nelly Furtado, All-American Rejects, David Archuleta, Lee Aaron, Alan Frew (of Glass Tiger), Honeymoon Suite and many more.
After living in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Toronto for most of his career, moving back home to Nova Scotia has brought him back to his Maritimes roots and his love of entertaining on any stage.
